Local Integration as a Durable Solution? Negotiating Socioeconomic Spaces between Refugees and Host Communities in Rural Northern Uganda

With a growing number of displaced people, there is need for robust approaches to coping with displacement. Uganda has progressive refugee policy that promotes freedom movement and the socioeconomic rights refugees. Specifically, refugees are often allocated land settle cultivate rural settlements, integrated social service provision facilitates interaction host communities. However, remain challenges in creating sustainable livelihoods settlements. There exist significant tensions over shared resources such as land, water, woodlots, grazing areas. Based on survey 416 households key informant interviews South Sudanese selected settlements Adjumani district, paper highlights refugees’ access economic spaces critical pathways integration. Uganda’s expands opportunity space; however, still encounter barriers accessing spaces.
